Neo-Tokyo (Sector 7)

The sprawling megacity where much of the Maximum Azure Glow story takes place.

Overview

Neo-Tokyo, officially designated “Sector 7” by The Accord, is the largest megacity in the Eastern Pacific Corridor. Built on the ruins of 21st-century Tokyo and expanded through land-reclamation and arcology construction, it’s a city of stark contrasts: glittering corporate towers in the Sky-Ring, sprawling Undercity in the foundation, and everything in between.

Districts

The Sky-Ring (152nd-300th floors)

Home to Accord headquarters, corporate arcologies, and the wealthy elite. Clean, climate-controlled, and heavily monitored. Access requires biometric authentication and approved business.

Notable Locations:

  • Accord Tower: The central administration building, 450 stories tall
  • Nexus Point: The main mass transit terminus connecting all sectors
  • Verdant Gardens: Hanging botanical gardens and luxury residences

Mid-Level (50th-151st floors)

The commercial and residential middle class. Shopping districts, entertainment complexes, and apartment blocks. Moderate security, but still under Accord surveillance.

Notable Locations:

  • Akihabara-2: Electronics and black market tech district
  • Shinjuku Entertainment Zone: Nightclubs, theaters, and sim-pods
  • The Bazaar: An open-air market that operates under quasi-legal status

The Undercity (Surface to 49th floor)

The oldest part of the city, where the original Tokyo streets remain. No corporate governance, minimal services, but genuine autonomy. Home to The Awakened, independent hackers, artists, and those who’ve slipped through The Accord’s cracks.

Notable Locations:

  • The Root: A network of tunnels and abandoned subway stations beneath the city
  • Kowloon Market: A labyrinthine black market where anything can be bought
  • Hacker’s Haven: An internet café that serves as a meeting ground for information brokers
  • Glow Square: A park where The Glow is particularly strong, used as a gathering place for The Awakened

Infrastructure

Transportation

  • Mag-lev trains: Connect sectors at speeds up to 500 km/h
  • Sky-trams: Aerial cable cars for mid-level travel
  • Underground monorail: Serves the Undercity
  • Stairways and ramps: The only way to move between levels without authorized transport

Power

  • Fusion reactors: Primary power for Sky-Ring and mid-level
  • Geothermal taps: Used in the Undercity (less reliable)
  • Glow collectors: Experimental technology, currently illegal in most districts

Communications

  • The Grid: Accord-controlled digital overlay
  • Mesh networks: Used in the Undercity to avoid surveillance
  • Short-range Glow-hops: Reliable but limited to Awakened

Culture

Neo-Tokyo is a cultural melting pot, with influences from:

  • Traditional Japanese customs (temples and shrines exist alongside arcologies)
  • International corporate culture
  • Underground hacker/cyberpunk subcultures
  • The Neon Church’s evangelism

Cuisine

  • Sky-fare: Synthetic and lab-grown foods for the elite
  • Street food: Ramen stalls, yakitori, and vending machines on every corner
  • Underground brews: Illegally brewed spirits and foraged ingredients

Climate

The city exists under a constant artificial twilight due to the tall structures and atmospheric filtration systems. Rain is frequent, often acidic near industrial zones. The Sky-Ring maintains Mediterranean conditions year-round.

Current Events (2147)

  • Glow surges have been increasing in frequency, causing concern for The Accord
  • The Neon Church has been gaining converts in the Undercity
  • Resource shortages have led to tensions between districts
  • Rumors persist about the return of The Last Library’s archives
